January ArtWalk is Poetry in Motion
Close your eyes and fall back in time. The scene opens in a hazy coffeehouse, populated by pale, thin figures in black turtlenecks and berets. The thumping of the lonesome bongo drum in the background keeps a steady beat as the lone artist on stage hisses a poem of revolution and anguish.
This is the scene that most of us think of when we hear the word Beatnik, or when someone refers to coffeehouse poetry. On January 12, 2012 the Breed Gallery in The Center for Contemporary Arts will be transformed into a 1950’s Beatnik Coffee House, and will feature an evening of poetry. Participants will travel in time and discover how the social, political and economic issues of the Beat Generation parallel those of today’s young people.
